NEWS: The 6S Study Skills Course Impresses Aim Higher Regional Co-Ordinators

Positively MAD’s highly successful study skills course, the 6S Study Skills Programme, continues to make a huge impression on young learners across the country.

Students  have been raving about the effectiveness of the course and the usefulness of the ideas presented.  Recently the course was run to a group of Year 11 students at a school in King’s Lynn, Norfolk. Also present were 6 AimHigher Regional Co-ordinators, who came along to assess the viability of the course for schools under their care. The AimHigher personnel were invited to experience the course as is it run to students and to take part throughout the day.
During the day, the students were shown how to use The Regular Review Process as a means to avoid cram-studying and how to use a variety of learning tools in order to become more versatile and effective learners.

Students were also taught the importance of things like sleep, diet, exercise and mental state to exam success and had opportunity to learn about which skills could help them achieve higher grades.
By all accounts the day was a huge success with all of the students reporting that they would definitely recommend the course to other students, saying things like:
• “It is fun and makes achievement easy!”
• “It shows us easier ways to revise”
• “This day has taught me a lot about studying and how to remember things”.

Based on their feedback, 81% of the students said that their confidence levels had been raised, 82% felt we had positively changed their view of their ability to succeed, and 100% said they would recommend the course to others.

This so impressed Lorraine Sturman, AimHigher Norfolk Manager, that she will be sending 5 members of her team on the 6S Certificated Coaching Course so that they can become practitioners of the course. This will enable them to run the course themselves to all the schools in their care.

“We are very excited about this development,” says Alan David Pritchard, the creator of the 6S Study Skills Course. “So many AimHigher co-ordinators wanting to run the course themselves means we have an even greater chance of affecting the learning potential of students all over Norfolk. Hopefully this will entice and inspire other AimHigher co-ordinators across the country to do the same.”
The 6S Certificated Coaching Course is a half-day training event held at venues around the country which shows teachers and interested personnel how to learn and how to run the 6S Study Skills Course in their own education establishments. The next one will be held in Oxford during March, and more details about this can be found on our main website
