On Monday 1 November 2010, Positively MAD piloted its new Primary school INSET called TEACHING TO REMEMBER at a Langney Primary School in Eastbourne. From the feedback this course received, it is clear that this course is set to be a winner with primary school teachers.

Created and delivered by Alan David Pritchard, the course allows teachers to explore memorable teaching methods - ways to teach so that students remember what we teach.

Here is what the teachers at Langney had to say:

“Wow! I think I might have a memory after all! Thank you for a fun day full of useful activities and skills for life.”

“I found today amazing, a very clever and easy way of teaching, learning and remembering. Brilliant.”

“Good ideas. Needed more time to think of how to put the ideas into a classroom situation. As a TA this will be good for the group work I do.”

Some really great ideas – thank you. Useful ways to train the memory. Will try to use as many of these with my nursery children. (Especially helping them to remember rhymes, stories, characters, etc.)

“Thanks for giving us some new ways to try and build the children’s knowledge. Not sure if we will get the chance to try everything out. Great to take home practical examples as a way to remember the different methods.”

“Thank you – very interesting and informative. And entertaining.”

“Today has been jam-packed. Picked up loads of ideas, will be using them in class. Especially useful as an NQT. The afternoon was harder because there was so much to get through .. maybe too much at once?”

“Wow! So much to remember, so little time! Some fantastic ‘props’ to take back to class. I am exciting about using them and empowering the children to use them! (Or at least some of them.) I wish I had your energy! Maybe I will now! Thank you.”

“Really good INSET with some fantastic ideas that I shall use in the classroom. Thank you.”

"Thank you for a great INSET. I can really see how your ideas will work with the children just as they have with us. I also hope to get top marks in the next pub quiz.”

“As much as anything, got lots of different systems and techniques for teaching to keep it interesting and memorable. Many thanks.”

“It was a fab INSET and I will use everything I have learnt and see what works if I can remember it!!! Ha ha. The children will benefit from the techniques you have explained. I liked that it was interactive and not boring.”

“I thought I had a rubbish memory – you proved me wrong! I can even imagine using these tools to help me remember my shopping list!! Thank you.”

“I really do have a rubbish memory, and found the day quite tricky, but now I have lots of strategies to try to help me cope with this, and most of all to help the children remember important facts!!”

“Thank you for showing us some different ideas to try with our children. I’m looking forward to trying some out – especially with the S.E.N pupils in our school. I really like the Roman Room activity. Many thanks.”

“Had a very fun and illuminating day!”

“Thank you for today. Very informative and useful.”

“An amazing session. Fantastic techniques that have really excited me. Can’t wait to try and put them into practice. A great motivational, enthusiastic speaker. Could have listened to him a second day – a bit slower, as at times it was hard to follow, make notes and digest. Thank you.”

“Lots of fantastic ideas. Thank you.”

“Thanks for the timely reminder of the vital importance of children remembering their learning and the innovative and fun teaching methods you showed with great enthusiasm and expertise. I really like the notion of teachers as action researchers and reminding teachers of the power of their creativity/ skills. A stimulating and thought-provoking day with loads of stuff to take away.”

“I think I will use some of these regularly, others may come to me when I am wondering how will I get this to stick? As someone who is always losing/ forgetting things, I will personally use the hooks. We already use ‘talk for writing’ with visual maps and actions. This gives the children the language of fiction/non-fiction genres. These techniques do offer aides to memory – which is one step in learning – to apply.”

“My letter is G – Great!”

“A memorable journey that kept me hooked throughout the day. Humour was evident, always important when adjusting ourselves to learn. Thank you.”

“I found today fun and interesting. So much to take in.”

“Thanks for a fun day. I will definitely use many of these techniques and tricks.”

“Thanks for the memories today. Your enthusiasm is truly infectious. I think we all have so much to take away and to put into practice.”

“Thank you very much for today. It was very informative and useful.”

A very interesting day. Alan was very enthusiastic, kept my attention at all times. He is quite obviously very passionate about what he does. Enjoyed the activities given, encouraged good conversations between colleagues. Thank you.”
