GCSE REVISION WORKSHOP

Positively MAD is proud to present an innovative, entertaining and highly effective student workshop designed to help students on the C/D borderline to improve their performance in Key Stage 3 and Key stage 4 English. This workshop is highly interactive, great fun, and show students how to use different learning tools to help them remember facts and skills when preparing for the English GCSEs.

The workshop begins with an hour which focuses on basic skills like spelling, punctuation, reading strategies and paragraph guidance tips. During the second hour of the two-hour workshop, we focus on: Writing Skills: Arguing and Persuading – during which students learn how to plan arguments better and they are shown how to use a mnemonic to remember different persuasive strategies

During the course we also play literacy games to keep thinking skills active and students are provided with an English resource at the end of the session. A terrific learning to learn experience!

The HOOKS, LINES AND THINKERS ENGLISH course has 2 main aims:

Course Content:

BASIC SKILLS

For the first hour of these 2 hour courses, students will be shown how to use the Number Rhyme Memory
Hook system to remember:

  • The difference between WILL and IMAGINATION
  • 2 effective spelling techniques
  • Important apostrophe rules
  • How to punctuate simple direct speech
  • How to keyword to improve reading and comprehension
  • The S.I.N.G method of improving comprehension
  • The difference between loose, balanced and end-stopped paragraphs

We then focus on:

Writing Skills: Arguing and Persuading: Students are shown how to use a BRIDGE MAP to identify the components of a valid argument so that they clearly understand the role of the statement, the premises, the supports and the assumptions. They have the opportunity to plan argumentative essays before being shown ways to improve persuasive writing. For this, they employ the FLATTERY mnemonic, which helps them to unlock 12 different persuasive writing techniques.
