Gripping Grammar is a highly-informative and entertaining course which teaches the fundamentals of grammar in a way that is simple to follow and easy to transfer. It shows teachers a systematic and effective process for sentence analysis, which combines knowledge of parts of speech with syntax and semantics to enable students to improve the quality of their writing and to develop a keen understanding of style. Using Positively MAD’s unique “Verb-First” approach, teachers will be able to teach grammar so that students will understand it better and be able to use it to enhance and improve their writing. This approach puts grammar in context and makes it fun (yes, fun) to teach.

Content of the Course

• The difference between verbs of action, possession and existence
• How to identify finite and non-finite verbs and to be able to distinguish between transitive and intransitive verbs
• How to identify subjects and predicates and to be able to differentiate between objects and complements
• Understanding gerundives, participles and infinitives
• Identifying main and subordinate clauses, and being able to name the correctly
• Basic sentence analysis: simple, compound and complex
• Knowing how grammar and style are complementary
• How to develop individual writing styles
• How knowledge of grammar and better planning can improve writing performance
