Thinking Skills

Who is it for?

This course is for all teachers at Primary and Secondary Schools who wish to make the teaching of thinking skills part of regular good practice. It’s an inspirational ONE day course for Key Stage1 - 4 teachers demonstrating the application of thinking skills across the curriculum.

Course Overview

The day will cover the following topics:

  1. What are thinking skills?
  2. How are we presently accessing thinking skills across the curriculum?
  3. How can we increase the incidence of critical thinking during lessons?
  4. What is creative thinking? How can we develop creative thinking skills in the classroom?
  5. How does questioning affect thinking?
  6. What strategies are available for 1) immediate uses? 2) long term uses?
  7. How can we plan lessons using the revised Bloom’s taxonomy?
  8. How do we cater for different types of thinkers?
  9. How can thinking be made visible?
  10. What are the links between thinking skills and multiple intelligences?
  11. How can we apply De Bono’s 6 Thinking Hats in our lessons?
  12. What are effective ways to approach problem solving?

Aims and Objectives

The first aim of the day, unashamedly, is to have fun.

The day also aims to change the way teachers think about their own thinking: to challenge them, to inspire them and to develop their skills of critical and creative thought.

The objective of the course is to provide effective techniques that will allow teachers to plan for thinking more efficiently and with greater creativity and focus.

Ultimately, the course aims to show teachers how to develop the critical and creative thinking abilities of the students they teach.

What you will receive

In addition to having a wonderfully enjoyable and inspiring experience, teachers who attend the course will receive the following:

A highly charismatic and confident presenter, with 15 years experience as a class teacher in primary and secondary schools, and 7 years experience as a teacher trainer and conference speaker. (He’s only on loan for the day, though).

A fully comprehensive workbook with templates, resources and additional information, including useful web links and thinking skills audit pages. This book has been praised by teachers for its usefulness, both as a workbook for the course, and as a post-course resource manual.

*(These are provided to show how critical and creative thinking skills can be applied to teaching Shakespeare, and serve as excellent platforms for teachers to use as inspiration to plan new topics of work).

What I liked about the day was having the time to recognise the good practice I am already doing, and having instantly-usable strategies to improve on what I am doing.” Deputy Head, St Clare’s Primary School

This course made me realise the importance of thinking skills and how to incorporate them into teaching.” Year 6 Teacher, Benson Primary School

The day is jam-packed with intelligent, highly practical ideas; crammed with crazy creative applications and delivered in an atmosphere of fun and enjoyment. A sense of humour and a willingness to embrace a more lateral way of thinking is required. Alan David Pritchard, Course Creator
