This course aims to explore the theories behind whole brain education and to focus on strategies for implementing holistic approaches to teaching number skills in primary mathematics. The emphasis is very much on increasing the visual, auditory and kinaesthetic possibilities within the Numeracy Hour, with detailed applications to suit a variety of learning styles and preferences. Combining accelerated learning and multi-sensory approaches, the course will cover difficult areas like fractions, division, mental multiplication, times tables and will touch on shape, measurement and problem solving. Useful counting strategies for Key Stage1 will be explored through the Chisenbop (finger math) method and we will focus on ways to apply number skills to written problems and everyday situations. We also examine an alternative approach to teaching fractions at key stage 2, and we look at the following areas: ways to develop the concept of subtraction; fun strategies for remembering times tables; understanding the concept of division; mental metaphors for mental maths, and the use of memory systems as powerful recall tools. Teachers will have the opportunity to explore applications to other areas of the Numeracy curriculum.
This course is suitable for all KS1 and KS2 teachers, and classroom assistants.

“I have to say you made a huge impression on everyone at Glebelands and we all think you are wonderful. It is rare that someone makes such an impression in such a short space of time but you certainly did that. I was also glad to see that you could feel what a special school ours is because I felt it immediately too.”
